Problem

  • 69 percent use snooze or set multiple alarms “sometimes"
  • Hitting snooze can disrupt sleep cycles and lead to feeling more tired throughout the day

Solution

DuolingoClock has an alarm clock that can only be turned off when you do a part of a lesson

Design

Setting the Alarm

We tapped into the familiar experience of setting iOS alarms to make the flow feel intuitive, then incorporated user preferences for their Duolingo lesson.

Ways to Turn Off Alarm

Matching Pairs

Users match words to their foreign counterparts, and once all pairs are correct, the alarm turns off.

Fill in the Blanks

Users are presented with sentences in a foreign language and must translate them by either choosing from multiple choice options or arranging words in the correct order.

Thoughts

In our increasingly busy lives, it’s easy to forget small but meaningful habits such as completing a daily Duolingo lesson. Missing one can break a learning streak, which often leads to a loss of motivation. Just like making your bed or fitting in a morning workout, completing small daily wins early can set a positive tone for the rest of the day. The Duolingo Clock aims to support that mindset by tying the completion of a lesson to turning off your alarm, encouraging consistency and making language learning part of your morning routine.
